Looking for your next cruise? Before you book the lowest-priced sailing you find, take a few minutes to look at the whole vacation.
A great cruise isn’t just about the price of the cabin. It’s about the ship, the destinations, the experiences, and how well the trip fits what you want from your time away.
After more than 30 cruises, I’ve learned that two cruises with similar prices can deliver very different experiences. Here’s what I recommend considering before making your next reservation.
1. Look Beyond the Price of the Cruise
It’s tempting to compare cruises by the advertised fare alone, but that number doesn’t always tell the whole story.
Consider what’s included in the price. Are you comparing the same cabin category? Does one option include specialty dining, beverage packages, Wi-Fi, or onboard credit? Are prepaid gratuities included, or will they be an additional expense?
Also, consider transportation to the port, hotel accommodations before your cruise, parking, and excursions. These expenses can add up quickly.
My advice? Compare the overall vacation cost rather than simply choosing the lowest advertised price. Sometimes spending a little more upfront can provide better value and a more enjoyable experience.
2. Choose the Right Ship for Your Travel Style
Not every cruise ship is right for every traveler, and that’s perfectly fine!
Some travelers love large ships packed with entertainment, restaurants, water slides, and activities. Others prefer a quieter atmosphere, fewer passengers, and a more relaxed onboard experience.
Think about what matters most to you.
Do you enjoy trying different restaurants? Is live entertainment important? Are you traveling with children or grandchildren? Would you rather spend your days relaxing by the pool or exploring a new destination?
The right ship can make a tremendous difference in your overall experience. A ship that’s perfect for one family might not be the best choice for a couple looking for a quiet getaway.
Before booking, take time to consider the ship itself, not just the itinerary or price.
3. Pay Attention to the Ports of Call
One of my favorite parts of cruising is waking up somewhere new. However, not all cruise itineraries offer the same experiences.
Consider which destinations you’d like to visit and what you want to do when you get there. Are you interested in history, architecture, local food, beautiful beaches, or simply wandering around a new town?
Also, look closely at the port schedule. How long will the ship stay in each destination? Does it arrive early enough for the excursion you want? Is the port close to the attractions, or will transportation be necessary?
And don’t overlook sea days. Some travelers love having extra time to enjoy the ship, while others prefer an itinerary with a different destination almost every day.
The best itinerary is the one that matches your interests and vacation style, not necessarily the one with the most ports.
4. Consider the Total Travel Experience
Your cruise vacation doesn’t begin and end at the ship’s gangway.
How far do you need to travel to reach the departure port? Will you need a flight? Would an overnight hotel stay before embarkation make the trip less stressful?
For cruises departing from a port far from home, I generally recommend seriously considering arriving at least a day early, especially when flying. Flight delays and cancellations can happen, and arriving the day before gives you a buffer rather than risking a missed departure.
You’ll also want to think about travel insurance, transportation arrangements, and whether you’ll need additional hotel nights before or after the sailing.
A little preparation can help prevent an avoidable travel problem from becoming an expensive headache.
5. Work With Someone Who Understands Your Priorities
You can find plenty of cruise fares online, but finding the right cruise takes a little more thought.
A good travel advisor helps you compare options based on your preferences, budget, and expectations. That might mean identifying a better itinerary, comparing cabin locations, explaining available promotions, or helping coordinate flights, hotels, and shore excursions.
The goal isn’t simply to book a cruise. It’s to help you choose a vacation you’ll be excited about taking.
As an independent travel advisor, I enjoy helping travelers sort through the options and make informed decisions. Whether you’re planning your first cruise or you’ve sailed many times before, having someone to help with the details can make the process easier.
So, What’s the Best Cruise for You?
The answer depends on what you want from your vacation.
For some travelers, the best choice is an affordable Caribbean cruise with plenty of time to relax. For others, it’s an Alaska sailing filled with incredible scenery, or a European itinerary that combines cruising with time exploring historic cities.
There’s no single cruise that’s best for everyone. The trick is finding the one that delivers the experiences you value most at a price that fits your budget.
